Esther Starobinets, MHC-LP

Esther works with adults who are trying to understand themselves and their relationships more clearly, particularly those who are recovering from emotionally abusive, controlling, or difficult relationships. She has an interest in working with survivors of narcissistic abuse, coercive relationships, and high-control environments, including individuals who have left cults or other controlling communities. Many of the clients she works with find themselves questioning their judgment, decision making, confidence, identity, or ability to trust themselves after spending significant time in relationships where their needs or perspectives were minimized. Esther helps clients reconnect with their own voice, rebuild self-esteem, and develop a stronger sense of who they are and what they want.

Esther also has extensive experience working with individuals who are navigating dating and relationships. She helps clients understand recurring relationship patterns, identify what they genuinely want and need from a partner, develop confidence in dating, establish healthy boundaries, and communicate more effectively. Whether someone is recovering from a painful relationship, struggling to trust themselves while dating, or repeatedly finding themselves in relationships that don't feel healthy, Esther provides a space to slow down, gain perspective, and develop a clearer understanding of themselves and their relationships.

Her approach is warm, curious, collaborative, and grounded in respect for each client's individual pace. Primarily psychodynamic and narrative, her work helps clients explore how past experiences and relationships may continue to shape their thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and expectations in the present. She helps clients recognize recurring patterns and examine the stories they have developed about themselves, particularly those shaped by other people or difficult experiences. When helpful, she also incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and practical skill-building to address anxiety, negative thought patterns, communication difficulties, and other challenges that may be keeping clients feeling stuck.

Esther holds a BA from Yale University, an MA from Yeshiva University, and a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Baruch College, City University of New York. She lives in Manhattan with her family.
